It sits in the background, in systems most travellers only notice when something goes wrong. Licences that once worked no longer do. Borders no longer rely on stamps. Private terminals, for all their ease, still sit within the same global framework. The experience of travel may still feel fluid. The structure behind it is not.

1. US Domestic Travel Real ID

For domestic travel within the United States, identification now follows a stricter standard. A REAL ID is required to board commercial flights, unless you are travelling with a passport or another accepted form of identification. At a glance, it is simple to check. A small star in the corner of your licence indicates compliance. Without it, the licence does not meet the requirement. It is an easy detail to overlook and an inconvenient one to discover in a queue.

For those who arrive without acceptable identification, there is now a secondary pathway through the TSA. For a $45 fee, identity may be verified through an additional screening process. It can be arranged ahead of time or handled at the airport. It is not designed as a replacement, but as a contingency. Between political stances and romantic get aways for two, February has not had the greatest reputation for including all aspects of a person’s life. Work. Kids. Partners. ...Culture? But if you are not in the States there are many countries that do celebrate February as more than just these commercialized points of view. Most of the Latin cultures especially celebrate Carnivale.

Not Carnival like you think of in New Orleans with the beads and the party scene that you’d want to hide your children from. Carnivale where you and your children get to taste foods from other cultures, hear and learn languages of tradition, native dances and costumes. And all while your children get to join in because these cultures don’t just welcome your children they pull them into the festivals and traditions.

Below is a curated selection of the best places to experience Carnivale without the noise of mass tourism. These are the towns, villages and island corners where Carnivale remains rooted in culture, not costuming. Where families participate. Children are expected. And travel meets rhythm, not performance.

Dominican Republic

Forget Santo Domingo and Santiago. The true family Carnavales live in:

So next time you’re planning a trip, ask yourself:
Are you picking somewhere that’s just family friendly, or truly kid inclusive?

And for the global homeschoolers out there, this is the perfect time to give your kids the crash course on what they have been learning. Perhaps even teach them something new from the source itself. Not to mention that learning to adapt to the rhythm of another culture will help your kids later in life when they need a diplomatic approach to greeting and socializing with foreign national peers.

Festivals also remove that pressure of perfection we sometimes feel as single parents when traveling. You don’t need to plan every moment or fill each hour with an itinerary. The celebration creates its own schedule and all you need to do is show up and go with it. Whether it’s a food festival in Tuscany, a lantern festival in Japan or a music celebration in the Caribbean there’s always something happening that keeps your child engaged and curious. You can stand shoulder to shoulder with locals, taste what they love and witness how they celebrate their history. For once you get to just be a participant not the planner. And that is the real luxury.

There’s also something freeing about how inclusive festivals are. Nobody cares if you’re there as a single parent, a family or a group of friends. Everyone is there for the same reason to celebrate life. Kids feel that energy immediately. They see how people dance, laugh and welcome strangers like old friends. It becomes a living lesson in kindness, resilience and community. They’ll remember the shared smiles, the drums, the street food, the handmade crafts and the joy that doesn’t require translation.

When you travel for a festival you’re giving your child more than entertainment. You’re teaching adaptability, empathy and cultural awareness without ever opening a textbook. They’ll start asking questions about why certain foods are eaten, why certain dances exist, why specific colors or animals are sacred. What those people are doing. Why they are doing that? Trying to pronounce the name of that food with you. And you’ll realize you’re both learning just in different ways.

Festivals are also a reminder that luxury doesn’t always mean quiet or exclusive. Sometimes it’s standing in a sea of color, eating something made from a century old recipe and watching your child’s face light up as fireworks burst over a place they’ve only seen on a map. It’s about shared wonder. It’s about presence. It’s about realizing that the world isn’t as far apart as it looks on paper.

Just maybe take some pictures anyway.

Traveling is a favorite of mine... clearly. I love seeing new and amazing cultures. So many include the kids in how they do things, cook, dance and more that everyone gets to relax, learn and enjoy when we find those great little spots. Especially when they aren’t in your typical tourist attraction guide book.

But there are a few things to help keep you safe that most people don’t know to do to prepare. And as a single mom it’s more important for me than ever to ensure that everyone is safe and secure while enjoying the local culture.

So next time you’re planning a trip, ask yourself:
Are you picking somewhere that’s just family friendly, or truly kid inclusive?

1. Know the Signals

The four finger “help” sign isn’t just for kids. It’s a discreet way to signal distress to others. Quick, silent and universal.

2. Master Your Phone’s SOS

iPhone: 5 rapid presses of the power button will call emergency services Samsung/Android: most use 3 presses (check your settings before you travel)

3. Your Country’s Embassy or Consulate Nearest You

In case of a crisis situation it’s incredibly important to already have at the ready your closest embassy or consulate location and phone number. The moment you step onto those grounds you’re back on your own country’s soil and under its protection. That’s not just symbolism it’s real security.

If you’re concerned you can call ahead so a representative or security can help you arrive safely. Lose your passport? The embassy is the only place that can issue a replacement and get you home. In an emergency the embassy becomes command central which is why saving their contact info and signing up for alerts before you travel is essential.

4. Stay Situationally Aware

Airports, stations, festivals, big crowds…all are prime times to keep your head on a swivel. It’s not about paranoia it’s about presence. Notice who’s near you, where your exits are and what your gut is telling you.

Situational awareness isn’t just about where you are it’s about how you move through that space.

5. Prep for the Worst, Travel Like the Best

Have a plan if you’re separated from your group. Carry ID, a backup credit card and a little cash stashed separately. A bit of foresight now means you get to sip your champagne later with peace of mind.

6. Hiring A Car Service

One of the easiest ways to reduce risk while traveling is to use a trusted car service arranged through your hotel or event. For single parents especially this takes the stress out of navigating unknown streets, late night returns or hauling kids through crowded transit hubs.

Hotels that provide secure transportation aren’t just offering convenience they’re offering peace of mind. And that kind of attention to safety is a huge draw especially for women and families in today’s world.

7. Protect Your Essentials

Keep cash, cards and documents separate so one lost bag doesn’t wipe you out. Your passport should never live in the same place as your wallet. Use the hotel safe for passports, backups of IDs and anything you don’t need while out exploring. A little separation means one mistake doesn’t turn into a disaster.

Phew! Driving to Seattle from Wyoming can be a long haul. Not for me or Bear, but for the busy 4 year old in the back. Bear and I could have kept going, but the little guy needed to be out of the car after 5 or 6 hours. And it was a 12.5 hour drive. The first time we stopped in Missoula, Montana. The first time we stopped in Missoula, Montana. I usually have a handful of go-to hotel brands that I book with for trips like this, but even those were pretty booked up that night. So we wound up staying the night at a Best Western. Not my first choice, but it does the job in a pinch.

It was harder to find places that were good with Bear, both in hotels and in restaurants, in Missoula. On the way back, we stayed at one of the Hilton properties in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and it was much more dog friendly. The hotel staff loved Bear and he became quite the personality.

While in the Seattle area, the boys and I stayed closer to my hometown. Fall City in the mornings for coffee at Aroma (love to Steve and Michelle!), 520 Bar and Grill in Old Bellevue and Carmine’s for Italian, which was probably the best dining experience of the trip. Carmine’s had a great food and wine menu, plus they were so accommodating of my little guy. Another favorite was Vivi Pizzeria in Woodinville. They have been a favorite of mine for years, and their pizza is to die for. The owner is always so nice and extremely welcoming to my son. Now with the two winery tasting rooms next door, there are even more beverage options.

One of the best moments was at Old Bellevue Park, where they have water spouts and a small waterfall for the kids to play in. My son ran, splashed and laughed until his lips turned blue and his teeth chattered, but he still didn’t want to leave.

Kid and Dog Friendly Highlights

Missoula, Montana

• Best Western – Easy last-minute booking when other options were full. Not luxury, but clean and functional for a quick overnight stop.

• Dog-friendly options here were limited, so plan ahead if traveling with pets.

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

• Hilton Property – Much more welcoming for dogs, with staff that were friendly and engaging with Bear. Great option for pet owners looking for a comfortable overnight stay.

Fall City, Washington

• Aroma Coffee Co. – Warm, welcoming coffee spot with friendly owners who remember locals and make you feel at home.

Old Bellevue in Bellevue, Washington

• 520 Bar and Grill – Relaxed spot with good food and a comfortable atmosphere for families.

• Carmine’s – Fantastic Italian dining with an impressive food and wine menu. Very accommodating for children without compromising the upscale feel.

• Old Bellevue Park – Features water spouts and a small waterfall that kids can play in. My son loved it so much he stayed until his lips turned blue.

Woodinville, Washington

• Vivi Pizzeria – Delicious pizza with an employee who is always warm and welcoming. Very kid-friendly, plus the convenience of two winery tasting rooms right next door.
